Dax grabbed his bow and walked back to a rock with a low height which he could duck behind.

“I can see it!” Raios called out, still standing in the open. “It’s so beautiful.”

The creature came out of the shadows and charged towards Raios.

“Get out of the way!” Dax ordered.

“I’ve never seen one so close before.”

The creature extended out its large wings, each one as tall as Raios. It flapped them slowly as it ran until it made a fateful leap which took it into the air.

Raios drew his sword but otherwise didn’t move.

Dax grabbed an arrow from his quiver and notched it in his bow. Thanks to the magical light, it was easy to spot its target. It wasn’t much wider than the tunnels, forcing it to fly in a cramped position overhead.

Dax, Raios, and other adventurers are in the depths of a cramped cavern when they encounter a wyvern. While not quite a dragon, this ferocious beast is the target of a contract they received. But who is giving them contracts to fight monsters?

Raios walked over to that side of the ship and saw the island with its massive coastline. He could see the storm’s eye circling around the land. A drip of water hit the top of his head. The downpour was just beginning. As he rushed for cover he could hear the sound of a powerful roar. He looked up to see a red dragon.

He was in awe for a brief moment before the dragon exhaled a burst of fire at the ship. The sails ignited immediately and the beam began to char. Raios grabbed hold of the wall in order not to lose his balance. The ship began rocking back and forth as gusts of wind began to blow past them.

This short passage features the character Raios as he encounters a massive dragon. Throughout much of the world, dragons have been hunted to near-extinction. What happens next when they meet this magnificent creature?

They walked through the portal and found themselves in a clearing in the woods. This was not like the normal woods. It was completely quiet, without even the sounds of bugs.

The moon was in a half phase, and stars were scattered across the sky. However, the stars did not seem to resemble any known constellations. They felt eerily isolated from the rest of the world.

Lucian sat on the floor in the center of the clearing. His eyes were closed and he was focused on meditating. As the adventurers came through the portal, Lucian came out of his meditation and stood up. He flashed a grim smile at the group.

“It looks like you’ve found me.”

Dorian watched Keegan take Colleen’s hand and pull her up the stairs to the elevated platform at the edge of the pier. As they made their way to the center of the platform he saw the crowd applaud.

Colleen took the bottle from one of the sailors and said,

“On the authority granted to me by our minister, I hereby christen the L.E. Tobin.”

She pulled back her arm and turned her body towards the ship. The crowd continued to cheer as they watched her lunge the bottle in a high arc. It hit the front of the ship, close to the deck. As soon as it collided with the wood, the glass shattered. Tiny shards fell into the water.

Dorian heard the cheers start to grow quieter and he turned to the rest of the crowd. He saw a large number of them leaving the port. Now that the christening was complete there was no other reason to stick around.

As he grew closer, he was able to make out the source of the light. It was a tiny forest sprite. She hovered above the ground, vibrating her wings, and seemed to be inspecting something on the ground. Those large footprints were present again, attracting her curiosity as well.

“You’ve seen the footprints too?” he asked her.

“Oh! Hello there elf. Yes, I have just come across these things. There’s a strange creature in our midst that I do not know. I do grow concerned for the beings of the crooked forest, that this may threaten them.”

“My name is Hérion. I’ve been looking for an antidote, as my cousin seems to have been paralyzed by one of the flowers in these woods.”

“If he has been poisoned, there is a natural herb which grows here that should prove to be a suitable antidote. But if I provide it to you, I shall need you to do me a favor.”

What does the sprite ask of Hérion? What quest must be pursue in order to save his cousin? And what created those footprints? The answers lie in “The Feckless King”.

“Kiera, please meet with me in one minute after I finish talking to my father,” Prince Edric commanded.

“Yes, my prince,” Kiera nodded.

She stood there in the hallway for a minute. Her body grew flush and she felt the air getting stale. She had to get outside. She quickly made her way towards the courtyard. Her heels echoed with every step. She winced each time as each click was deafening.

Out in the courtyard she could finally breathe. The gravity of the situation was finally hitting her. How did it come to this? Her life was going in an unexpected direction and she was finding it hard to stay in control. She had to meet with the others soon. She hoped that there was still a chance for diplomacy.

Yet she was more nervous that it was too late. She thought back to the first time she noticed a schism in the League, one that could grow and fragment completely.

This is a short excerpt from “The Reckless Assassin” in which Lady Kiera Windfall reflects on her membership in the League of Sorceresses. While the organization had been formed with ideals, cracks formed due to political differences. Perhaps such cracks are inevitable, but it leaves both sides weaker than before.

“Caraxes, what is your take on these matters?” Julius asked with a humorous tone.

“Will you stop that?” Rhaegon chastised his friend. “He’s still a horse.”

“A cute one. He has a gentlemanly voice,” Lily complimented.

“I appreciate your kind words madam,” Caraxes noted kindly. “Though I must defer to the prince on matters of diplomacy.”

“Rhaegon, are you sure you really wanted to take Caraxes with you?” Lady Kiera asked apprehensively.

“He’s my horse. I paid for him and I’m going to ride him,” Rhaegon responded adamantly

Like many heroes who must traverse long distances, the adventurer Rhaegon has a talented steed. However, Caraxes is no ordinary horse. His talents quickly turn towards intelligence rather than his speed or stamina.

Iago went to the capitol building to report for his job. He couldn’t help but feel excited.

The building had served as a model of beautiful architecture, as he had been taught in some of his classes. To see it in person was marvelous.

He paused as he stared at the stone pillars lining the outside. It looked much like the paintings from artists of the past, but to see the original inspiration for their crafts was fascinating. He placed his hands on the door to the building, imagining all of the others throughout history who touched the same thing.

None of these parties supported intervening with the Arnorians. Non-intervention was the party platform for each of them. Lairion and Tarwariell were in the Party of Stone, which had the most interventionist policy. Yet it was just a non-binding agreement to support trading with elves in Arnoria through tax incentives.

It wasn't enough, the four of them agreed. There was a need for a new political organization to represent the true needs of the elves. They wouldn't try diplomacy or art as the primary way of dealing with enemies.

Rather, the best position would be to go on the offensive, to display their strength. They needed a new name: the Party of Steel.

The elven lands of Westronîl are ruled by a king, but also a small council of aristocrats. These elites are divided into four distinct groups: the Party of Water, the Party of Stone, the Party of Wood, and the Party of the Sun.

After walking a bit farther the two of them came to a small clearing. There was a massive tree in the center of it. This tree was nearly completely surrounded by swampy water, but there was a bridge connecting their path across the water to the plant.

The tree had an incredible trunk, spanning a length much longer than anything Dorian had seen before. It made the trees back home seem inadequate, like they were just weeds. In addition to its incredible length, it was also impressively high. It stood alone in the clearing, but its branches and leaves were enough to cover the sky.

“This is what I wanted you to see. This is the head of the being we call Nasrin. You saw earlier all of the tiny mangroves that were scattered throughout the swamp. Well, they were not just separate plants. All of them are in fact part of a single entity, this entity. Nasrin has lived here for so long, has grown so large, that it has continually grown offshoots of itself. But we’ve seen the roots have all led back to here.”

“How long ago did you say Nasrin was planted?”

“Nobody knows. We’ve lived in this rainforest for thousands of years. As far back as we’ve been able to identify from historical and archaeological records, it has always existed and played a critical part of the rainforest ecosystem. In fact, we believe this one tree may have been the one to start the rainforest. Everything else grew around it.”

“What do I do now?” Dorian asked aloud. While he had to wait for his clothing to dry, he couldn’t help but think about what to do now that he arrived in the mountains.

“Wait here. You will be contacted soon,” advised the dragonstone.

“Contacted? Who will do that?” Dorain inquired.

“It should happen later in the day. I advise you to put clothes on before that happens.”

As the dogs mushed towards his destination, Hérion's attention turned to the night sky. These frequent night trips were fairly banal, as the tundra offered no scenery of interest.

The sky however was a different story. Streaks of green danced slowly through the sky as stars glistened in the distance.

He wondered what caused these lights to form, and what their purpose was. They moved methodically, as if they too had a destination for the night.

As they traveled further towards the east, the grassy fields turned to lush green forests. Although they did not travel through these trees directly, he was able to see large beasts traversing through the trees and birds roosting in the canopies.

"What are those things?" he asked one of the merchants as they traveled.”

"What?"

"The large gray beasts. With horns."

"Those are the eli-phans. You best stay away from them. They are dangerous."

He was faster than anticipated, and his reactions were quick. Dax tried to think of a weakness he could exploit. He had to buy some time to think. Another fist came right for him. He jumped to the side at the last minute, causing Hector to twist again and change directions.

Iago knocked on the door of the mansion. It appeared to be massive, spanning the size of the building, but with twice as many stories. Iago wondered what one would be able to do with all of that space.

As he entered, he saw a number of old marble statues lining the atrium and a carpet that stretched from the entrance all the way around the corridor.

This amount of wealth was astonishing, but thinking back to his conversations, he wondered what Shana’s place looked like. It was said to be more ornate than what he saw in front of him. He examined one of the marble statues up close and estimated that it was many times his annual salary alone. It made him wonder just how much these people were getting paid, and how much was illicit.

Dorian looked down at the two cards in his hand. He looked back at the four cards on the table. He still wasn’t used to this format of two and three, the Karadrian rules, but he was following the house.

“So, isn’t it true that you know of the Tier One of the United Casters?” Dorian said, trying to make idle chat to his neighbors.

“I have friends in many places,” the pasha Darius responded casually.

“Darius doesn’t like to talk about his friends,” Esther said. Her cards were face-down on the table. She hadn’t even looked at them.

Dorian is playing a card game, but it’s not as fun as it seems. His playmates are high-level politicians in Karadria, and he wants to win knowledge more than money.
